France Warns Russia: Sanctions Coming If Ukraine Peace Talks Fail

French President Emmanuel Macron said stronger sanctions could be imposed on Russia if President Vladimir Putin does not cooperate in peace talks with Ukraine. He made these remarks after a summit in Washington, where US President Donald Trump expressed hope for a peace agreement.

Macron also highlighted that recent US secondary sanctions have affected Russian energy sales, showing that pressure on Moscow can work. He warned that if Russia refuses serious negotiations, the West is ready to take further action.

The summit also focused on Ukraine’s defense. European leaders agreed that any peace deal should not limit Ukraine’s military, ensuring it can defend itself against future threats. Macron expressed hope that contacts between Russia and Ukraine will resume soon, with a possible trilateral summit involving Trump, Putin, and Zelensky within a few weeks.

Traders and investors are paying attention because these developments can affect currency markets, safe-haven assets, and global risk sentiment.

Impact:
If Russia resists peace talks, sanctions could put pressure on the Ruble and global markets. If diplomacy succeeds, European currencies and risk assets might get a short-term boost.
